This month the Eye Film Instituut Nederland (Filmmuseum as it remains in our hearts) is releasing a newly-restored version of this greatest of cinematic love stories. Treat your eyes to Humphrey Bogart (as Casablanca nightclub owner Rick) and Ingrid Bergman (as his lost and then found love) in all their digitally-remastered glory, while your ears (and soul) are soothed by a state-of-the-art version of Dooley Wilson’s ‘As Time Goes By’.
15 reasons why you should revisit Casablanca (again and again):
15 – To see how Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart could possibly look any better.
14 – To understand why you just told your ex that you’ll ‘always have Paris.’
13 – Because contrary to what some (leading men) may say, the problems of three little people really do amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.
12 – Because you thought your timing in love was bad.
11 – Because 68 years after its release, top Amsterdam bankers may still end up as pastry chefs.
10 – Because you thought you were hot shit giving your tram seat to that elderly lady.
09 – Because that €800 and two years you just spent trying to get your resident’s permit were a walk in the park next to trying to get transit papers in Vichy-occupied Morocco.
08 – Because the ‘La Marseillaise’ (French national anthem) never sounded so good.
07 – Because Dooley Wilson singing ‘As Time Goes By’ never sounded so good.
06 – To be thankful that your daily dealings take place in the Albert Cuyp market.
05 – To be reminded that it’s never too late to be altruistic. Even for you.
04 – To support the city’s independent cinema. (And hope that Ghostbusters is next on its digitally-remastered list. I’m serious).
03 – Because you need a good cry.
02 – Because you need a good laugh.
01 – Because you’re looking for an excuse to round up the usual suspects and play it. Again.
Casablanca screens from Thursday 24 June. It’s followed by the Eye’s summer Ingrid Bergman retrospective, beginning 1 July, which includes a night exploring the film’s influence on popular culture.
