SATURDAY 6 AUGUST
Tolhuistuin, 20.00, €10
I’m still not quite sure what it is about Saharan and Tuareg cultures that breeds such musically rich yet specific guitarists, but Bombino is the latest in a line of top musicians to emerge from a folk scene that initially exploded globally with Tinariwen. As you’d expect, the vibe is as dry as the desert, with bluesy African riffs looping, accompanied by hypnotic and soft vocal accompaniment. After years of folk performances and home recordings, his debut album Agadez was finally released in April. And you can also learn more about his struggles as a refugee and beyond in the documentary Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion, about the Tuareg Rebellion.
Course, weather for this outdoor show at Tolhuistuin isn’t likely to be approaching desert conditions, but this lulling African blues is created for fresh air performances. You can also win a pair of tickets by emailing win@unfoldamsterdam.nl with Bombino in the subject.
